Amplified (2011) is a young adult novel by Tara Kelly. Published by Henry Holt.

When privileged 17-year-old Jasmine gets kicked out of her house, she takes what is left of her savings and flees to Santa Cruz to pursue her dream of becoming a musician. Jasmine finds the ideal room in an oceanfront house, but she needs to convince the three guys living there that she’s the perfect roommate and lead guitarist for their band, C-Side. Too bad she has major stage fright and the cute bassist doesn’t think a spoiled girl from over the hill can hack it. . .

In this fresh new novel by critically acclaimed author Tara Kelly, Jasmine finds out what happens when her life gets Amplified.

My thoughts… Amplified is yet another awesome YA book about girls and guitars! I love those kind of books! In fact, Amplified is #4 on my list of favorites, after The Disenchantments (#3), Five Flavors of Dumb (#2) and I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone (#1). In Amplified, adorable Jasmine Kiss tells her coming-of-age story struggling to earn respect as the new lead guitarist for synth/industrial rockers C-Side. Jasmine is an undeniably charming protagonist! However, I was equally enchanted by C-Side’s sexy free-spirited lesbian singer Veta Ramirez! C-Side’s sound, from detailed descriptions in the prose and by the author’s own admission, is inspired by Canadian synth/industrial rockers The Birthday Massacre! Oh, and I love books where the authors include “soundtracks” like Tara Kelly does (here).
