My thoughts… Joker Rising is like Goodfellas (1990) as if produced by DC Comics. Or the Batman universe as seen through Martin Scorsese‘s vision. This gritty crime drama imagines the origin of Heath Ledger‘s version of The Joker, before the events of The Dark Knight (2008), as he rises up from the depths of the criminal underground and descends into vengeful madness! Joker Rising drastically re-imagines Harley Quinn (Katie Young) as a hooker with a heart and flips her obsessive love for The Joker into his unconditional love for her, making DC Comics‘ greatest villain a kind of tragic anti-hero. Poison Ivy is also wonderfully re-imagined as Ivy (Sarah Nunez) – a Mexican drug lord! Joker Rising was planned as the first film of a trilogy, and a trailer for the second film The City With Two Faces was produced in 2013 (here). However, crowdfunding was unsuccessful in 2013 and, again, in 2016. Hopefully, they’ll find a way to get the sequel produced.
