My thoughts… Deeper: The Retribution of Beth is a rape-revenge thriller similar to 2010’s disturbing I Spit On Your Grave which was a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. However, the difference is that I Spit On Your Grave, both versions, is unashamed sexploitation while Deeper: The Retribution of Beth is a smart thriller that has something to say about date rape, amateur porn and, most importantly, the objectification of women. One Amazon reviewer called this film “I Spit On Your Van”! I wish I’d have thought of that!

Mark (Matthew Kevin Anderson) is a journalist for an indie pop culture magazine called Xice who is sent to do an article on Steve (Andrew Francis) and John (Greyston Holt) who run an amateur porn site called XBus. Misogynists Steve and John drive around in a white van and pick up hot girls on the street, then, pay them to have sex in the van while the act is caught on video. With Mark on board, Steven and John pick up Beth (Jessica Harmon) and Sam (Elise Gatien). However, feminist badass Beth, with her timid friend Sam in tow, has retribution on her mind but, soon, her plan spins wildly out of control and she falls deeper and deeper into the mess she’s made with deadly results.

The film’s title, at first, seems kind of straightforward but it’s not quite as obvious as you might think. Cough! Cough! The Usual Suspects! Cough! Cough! Now, if you watch Deeper: The Retribution of Beth and expect to feel like a filthy morally-depraved human being like you did after watching I Spit On Your Grave, you won’t – except for the rape scene in the middle. You will cringe and you will look away but it is not what you think it will be. Let’s just say Steve gets some just vengeance. Cough! Cough! Deliverance! Cough! Cough! Oh, and there is very little nudity if you must know. There is only 5 minutes of bare breasts at the very beginning when the concept of the XBus is set up. No sex either, save for the rape scene. In fact, the rape that actually fuels the vengeance of the film is never even shown – it’s only hinted at in flashbacks. Fraternity party. GHB. Very topical. Deeper: The Retribution of Beth is a smart, twisty, well-acted, and well-made low-budget thriller.
