My thoughts… Film Craze called this low-budget sci-fi film Blade Runner meets Sin City“, and I can’t think of any better comparison! However, despite being obviously influenced by those films, Apocalypse Kiss is not derivative. Director Christian Jude Grillo takes the cyberpunk of Blade Runner and the film noir style of both films and twists those influences with a retro ’80s vibe to create his own unique futuristic thriller. Apocalypse Kiss looks great, despite its budget, but what makes this film better than most indie sci-fi thrillers is its characters and their stories, especially psychopath Katia (Carmela Hayslett). When we first meet Gladys’s manipulative lesbian lover, she’s deaf and mute. But it’s a ruse. Katia’s not deaf and she speaks with a Russian accent! But it’s a ruse! She doesn’t love Gladys like Gladys loves her and she doesn’t even have a Russian accent! Who is Katia?! Is that even her real name?! I would love to see an Apocalypse Kiss prequel about how Katia and Gladys hooked up! A sequel, obviously, is out of the question.

My only problem with Apocalypse Kiss is in its science. It’s set in a future where the sun has entered “its red giant phase.” First, that won’t happen to our sun for about another 5 billion years. Second, in its red giant phase, the sun will expand in size and consume Mercury, Venus and, possibly, Earth. But, even if it doesn’t consume Earth, the planet will be scorched and devoid of life. At the very least, Earth will be pretty damn hot! However, good science isn’t needed to enjoy a good sci-fi movie!

Warning: Apocalypse Kiss contains full-frontal male nudity courtesy of a guy who looks like Ron Jeremy’s less endowed brother! But, there’s boobs, too!

Oh, and Carmela Hayslett is my newest crush! I loved her as Katia in Apocalypse Kiss! However, Hayslett was previously best known as the top hat-wearing horror hostess Roxsy Tyler who hosted the monthly web series Roxsy Tyler’s Carnival of Horrors (2010-14) with Count Chuckula (Chuck Maher). She recently resurrected Roxsy Tyler with Count Chuckula for the new fan-funded reality horror series Roxsy Tyler’s House of Horrors (2017- ). Watch Roxsy Tyler on YouTube (here) and Vimeo (here). I’m going there now!
