The FrightFest Short Film Showcase contained another fine selection of horror quickies, the best one surely had to be Total Fury. This over-the-top gorefest was incredible and told the story of a young girl who has to combat a large collection of bad guys to escape graphic torture. She takes inspiration from Arnold Schwarzenegger movies circa 1980 unleashing a parade of violence that turned the whole screen red.

Canada. Not rated. 12:52 run time. Watch the film on Vimeo (here).

My thoughts… Total Fury is totally insane! It takes the torture porn of Eli Roth’s Hostel, mixes it with the excessive gore of an over-the-top Japanese horror film – like The Machine Girl – and sprinkles it with a healthy dose of love for ’80s Arnold Schwarzenegger action films! Brilliant! This trio of maverick filmmakers (François Simard, Anouk Whissell & Yoann-Karl Whissell) is responsible for the awesome ’80s-inspired post-apocalyptic action/adventure film Turbo Kid (2015). I watched that film last summer on a friend’s recommendation and I absolutely loved it! It has teeenage superheroes, adorably cute female robots, excessive gore, and Michael Ironside [who, to me, will always be renegade scanner Darryl Revok in David Cronenberg’s 1981 classic Scanners – one of my all-time favorite horror films]. I’ll have to re-watch Turbo Kid and add it to this blog. You should watch it, too. For now, watch the lovely Anouk Whissell kick zombie ass in an awesome director’s cut promo for Pub Festival SPASM 2009 here …

Watch the TV spot (here). Expect more here from this trio soon!
